European Union top diplomat Kaja Kallas warned on Wednesday of a possible attack by Russia in the coming years.

“Many of our national intelligence agencies are giving us the information that Russia could test EU’s readiness to defend itself in three to five years,” she said, addressing the annual conference of the European Defence Agency in Brussels.

“Russia is not the problem for some, but for all of us. Europeans need to wake up,” she urged.

Moscow currently spends almost five times more on defence than the EU, Kallas added and called for an increase in spending.

“Europe’s failure to invest in military capabilities also sends a dangerous signal to the aggressor. Weakness invites them in.”

“We need to prepare. There’s nothing that cannot be weaponized against us today,” Kallas said, without giving further details on the intelligence information.

Kallas also said that work is under way on the 16th package of EU sanctions on Russia over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The EU and its member states have provided Ukraine with a total of more than €134 billion ($140 billion) in aid including close to €50 billion in military support, Kallas said.
