Local authorities are calling on the residents of several communities in northern Israel to stay close to bomb shelters due to the heightened tensions in the region.

The request was made to those living in Nahariyya, a city about 10 kilometres from the border with Lebanon, as well as communities near the Golan Heights, Israeli media reported.

The appeal was seen as a precautionary measure, as the Israeli military has yet to deliver its own such request.

Tensions are high after the targeted killings last week of Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Both groups have deep ties to Iran.

In response, Iran and its non-state allies – including Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in Yemen and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon – have vowed to deliver a punishing attack on Israel.
