Munich’s fatal car-ramming attack drew opposing demonstrations near the scene of the incident on Sunday.

The far-right anti-migrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) mounted a vigil on the central square Königsplatz, a few hundred metres from the street Seidlstrasse where the attack took place on Thursday. An Afghan immigrant is being held in connection with the attack and an Islamist motive is suspected.

Those opposed to exploiting the attack for political purposes held their own demonstration opposite the AfD gathering.

Police were present in force to separate the two demonstrations held as snow fell sporadically in the Bavarian capital. They put the number attending the AfD vigil at 70, and the demonstration at 600.

The family of the Algerian-born woman and her child killed in the attack have called for it not to be exploited. They died in hospital on Saturday. At least 37 others were injured.
