More than 50 people have been injured in a collision between two tourist buses in Barcelona, officials said on Monday.
Four people are in critical condition, according to the authorities of the Catalan capital in north-eastern Spain. They were said to have been taken to various hospitals in the city.
There was initially no information about the identities of the injured. It was only stated that pedestrians were among them, and one of them was only 17 years old.
Regional President Salvador Illa assured the injured of the support from the Catalan government.
The authorities reported that those affected include a larger group of young holidaymakers from Italy, mostly aged 17 and 18, who are staying in a hotel in the Catalan resort of Lloret de Mar and had taken a day trip to Barcelona on Monday.
The Italian bus ran into another bus on the Diagonal, one of Barcelona’s main streets, which was parked at the roadside to let in cruise ship passengers, according to the TV channel RTVE and other media, citing witnesses.
The cruise tourists are said to come from Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.
In the accident, the front bus veered onto the pavement, where it came to a halt after colliding with a tree and a street lamp that was knocked down in the process.
The cause of the accident is still unknown. The police are said to have launched an investigation.
