“It’s something we have to do and i wish more people would understand what veterans have done and are still doing for our county,” said Dennis Newara, a Vietnam War Veteran.
For Dennis Newara, being a veteran is privilege.
Every day of the year he wears a badge of honor, but on days like Saturday, it shines extra bright.
Newara, along with his fellow brothers and sisters of Vietnam Vets Chapter 435, lead the Veterans Day parade every year.

It kicks off at Veterans Stadium and marches south on State Street ending near the Erie VA Medical Center.
“My father his three brothers were in world war ii and it was almost like i had to do it even though i was drafted,” said Newara.
The Vietnam veteran has advice for younger generations who are thinking about serving.
“Those young men and women, i spoke to a couple last night at our legion in Wesleyville. They seem to be dedicated and their on the right path,” said Newara. “There’s always debate on this, that, or the other thing but it’s still america and we still should act like one united county.”

State representatives, schools and other organizations such as the Purple Heart Chapter 197 participated in the parade as well.
“I’m always honored to participate in those events and showcase those one percenters that made the ultimate sacrifice or those that were able to survive their injuries,” said Brian Fuller, a commander with the Northwest PA Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Fuller said not only is the region extremely supportive but erie’s population has a strong representation of those who have served.
“Sacrifice is not in vain,” said Fuller. “Thank you to the community that came out today and for everybody that supports the military or the purple heart.”
