The deputy leader of the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement has portrayed the agreement on a ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip as a triumph over Israel.

Khalil al-Hayya, the deputy head of the Hamas Political Bureau, said following the announcement of the agreement it represented a “historic moment.”

“Our people have thwarted the declared and hidden goals of the occupation. Today we prove that the occupation will never defeat our people and their resistance,” al-Hayya added.

He described the massacres of Israelis on October 7, 2023, as a turning point in the history of the Palestinian cause, stating that Israel had been hit to the core.

Hamas will continue to be guided by the aim to wrest Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa Mosque from Israel, said al-Hayya.

“Our enemy will never see a moment of weakness from us,” he added.
