The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is bringing forward its national party conference from March to January in light of early parliamentary elections set for February 23, co-party leader Alice Weidel said on Tuesday.
Weidel did not give an exact date or location for the meeting, which will decide the anti-immigration and Russia-friendly party’s election programme.
The AfD is expected to officially nominate Weidel as its candidate for chancellor there.
Germany is set to head to the polls in just over three months following the recent collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left coalition.
Tuesday’s decision on an election date set the parties off in earnest in their race to attract voters.
The AfD recently made huge gains in three eastern states that held regional polls, putting it in strong position ahead the snap federal election.
In the last federal election in 2021, the party secured around 10% of the vote. The latest opinion polls put it at around 17% nationally.
