French investigators have caught two casino cheats in the Paris suburb of Enghien-les-Bains who allegedly used a sophisticated technique to fraudulently win tens of thousands of euros per evening.
In order to gather evidence on the two men, investigators first installed an elaborate surveillance system in the casino, France Info reported on Friday, citing the police.
This enabled them to establish that one of the perpetrators used a tiny earpiece at the poker table that was so small that it had to be removed with a magnet.
The fraudster received instructions via the earpiece, from an accomplice who was in a car outside the casino. The accomplice in turn used images from a mobile phone camera of the perpetrator at the poker table.
The special camera was installed in the side of the mobile phone and filmed the croupier dealing the cards at a wide angle.
During a search of the duo’s car and hotel room, the police discovered numerous access cards for casinos throughout Europe. One investigator told the broadcaster that the case should “encourage the casinos to take measures to ensure that this type of fraud can no longer take place.”
