The official lap time for the Ford Mustang GTD on the famed Nurburgring in Germany has been revealed at an impressive 06:57.685. That sub-seven-minute lap officially makes it the fastest American production car to lap the ‘Ring and we’re sure will spark many debates among enthusiasts.
Learn why Jeremy Clarkson isn’t a fan of the new hybrid Ferrari 296 GTS.
According to Ford, the Mustang GTD that completed the official lap time was entirely stock, save safety equipment required by the Nurburgring for lap record attempts. That included a roll cage, competition seat, and five-point harness.
Nobody in their right mind thought the new Ford Mustang GTD would set a class record on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, but Ford was targeting a time of under 7 minutes and that’s been accomplished. In other words, we’d say this is a success.
Ford CEO Jim Farley was obviously on cloud nine, saying the Mustang GTD “can compete with the world’s best supercars.” It certainly has a supercar cost with an estimated beginning price of $325,000.
Based on the Mustang GT3 race car, the GTD has been developed over the last two years. The process has involved running the vehicle not only around the Nurburgring but other iconic racetracks around the world, ensuring it can compete at a high level.
We imagine while some will put few miles on their Mustang GTD and others will take it to meets and shows only, there will be at least some owners who track their car. We imagine like other high-strung street cars that are essentially racecars, it will be a vehicle not just anyone can push to the limit without immediately getting into trouble.
It’s worth pointing out if Ford does want to try taking down the venerable Porsche 911 GT3 RS, its record lap time is 6:49.328 set back in 2022. There are some rumors Ford is going to make tweaks to the GTD or even release an even more hardcore version of the already extreme pony car. If true, it will be interesting to see what lap time that vehicle would be able to capture.
