Manfred Weber, the German head of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), called for a swift government formation following Sunday’s parliamentary election.
He said party ally Friedrich Merz was well suited for the international stage.
“Friedrich Merz also knows that Europe is not led by Berlin making decisions but by inviting dialogue,” the EU lawmaker told Bavarian public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk.
“All of Europe is waiting for stability from Germany,” Weber said. He stressed the importance of Berlin quickly becoming operational again, after Germany’s governing coalition spectacularly collapsed in early November.
“A months-long stalemate, in which everyone gets buried in coalition details and coalition negotiations, harms European interests and harms German interests,” Weber stressed.
