Chinese President Xi Jinping has landed in the Russian city of Kazan for the BRICS summit of emerging industrialized nations.
Television images showed the head of the Russian republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, welcoming Xi at the airport on Tuesday.
Xi is one of more than 20 heads of state and government expected at the summit, which runs until Thursday.
The acronym BRICS refers to the first five member countries of the organization: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are also already in Kazan.
On the first day of the summit, one-on-one talks are planned between Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin will try to use the summit to show that he is not isolated internationally despite his war against Ukraine and the resulting Western sanctions.
