Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will not travel to the summit meeting of the BRICS group of states in Russia due to an injury, media reports said on Sunday.
Lula sustained a cut on his head at home on Saturday, news websites such as G1 and CNN Brasil reported, citing a medical note distributed by the presidential office.
The note stated that, following an examination, doctors advised the 78-year-old to refrain from long-distance flights. However, he can continue with his other activities.
According to the reports, it was stated in a separate announcement that Lula will participate in the summit via videoconference.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to host the other heads of state and government from October 22 to 24 in Kazan, the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan.
Moscow is hosting the summit of the group led by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), which has now been expanded to include countries like Iran and the United Arab Emirates, as a global political event.
