Authorities in Germany are trying to figure out what triggered a blast at a police station in Berlin late on Thursday evening, but do not believe the explosion was part of an intentional attack.

A policeman suffered injuries to his face and eye and underwent an operation in hospital overnight, a police spokesman said. A policewoman also suffered blast trauma, but has since been released from hospital.

“According to the current state of the investigation, it is possible that the detonation was caused by improper handling of pyrotechnics,” the police spokesman told dpa. “A reconstruction of the event should clarify what happened.”

The officers were conducting a routine patrol of the station’s perimeter fence in the northern Berlin district of Wittenau when an unknown object exploded, police said.

Both officers are currently not fit for questioning, according to the spokesman.
