The city of Berlin lit up the iconic Brandenburg Gate with a projection of the Israeli flag on Monday to mark the anniversary of the attack on Israel led by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“Berlin is sending a signal to the world that we stand with Israel, that we hope with the families of the hostages that humanity and compassion will always be stronger than hatred,” said Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner.

“Berlin is the city of freedom,” the mayor of the German capital added.

The landmark was also illuminated with the words “Bring them home now,” a slogan used to demand the release of Israeli hostages kidnapped during the October 7, 2023, attack and held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

A year earlier, on the day of the attack, the Brandenburg Gate was also lit up with the colours of the Israeli flag.
