German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has hailed Robert Habeck as “super pragmatic” shortly before his nomination as the lead chancellor candidate for the Greens for the upcoming elections.
Germany is currently preparing for early elections, expected in February, following the collapse of the government coalition last week.
Baerbock stated that, as economy minister, Habeck had maintained the course during times of crisis and freed Germany from its dependency on Russia as an energy supplier.
Baerbock made these remarks on Sunday at the Green Party’s conference in Wiesbaden, Germany. “I want exactly that: you as Chancellor,” Baerbock said, addressing Habeck.
“No one can steer the ship in a storm like Robert Habeck and at the same time set the sails properly when the wind is favourable.” She pledged her support to him for the election campaign.
Habeck, who also serves as vice chancellor in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government, confirmed his plans to run as the Green Party’s candidate for the top job in a video published on social media last week.
