Iran will respond to the latest Israeli attacks, according to a close adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“The Israeli attacks will not go unanswered,” Kamal Kharrazi, Khamenei’s foreign policy adviser, told Arabic news channel Al Mayadeen, according to Iran’s IRNA state news agency.
The range of Iranian missiles could also be increased in the future, said Kharrazi.
He also said that in the event of an existential threat from Israel, the country would revise its current nuclear doctrine.
Technically, Iran is capable of producing nuclear weapons, he said, adding, “the only obstacle is the religious ban.”
Tehran insists nuclear weapons have no place in Iran’s defence strategy and that its nuclear programme is peaceful and compliant with international regulations.
Furthermore, there is a fatwa – a religious legal opinion – from Khamenei, which prohibits both the construction and use of weapons of mass destruction.
Kharrazi’s comments referred to Israeli attacks in recent weeks on Iran’s military installations and anti-aircraft defence system, which caused little damage, according to Tehran. The attacks were in retaliation to Iran launching around 200 missiles at Israel at the beginning of October.
