Ehe world of golf began a day of mourning this Sunday once the news broke on Saturday that the player Grayson Murray, winner this year of his second PGA Tour title at the Sony Open in Hawaii, had died. The young man from North Carolina was competing this week for the Charles Schwab Challengealthough he decided to withdraw from the tournament when his second round was about to end.
Grayson 30 years old, had just scored 68 strokes on the first day and decided to leave the course after playing the 16th hole. He had made three bogeys in a row (he had five that day). However, it was far from a bad sporting streak that caused Grayson to leave the tournament. His parents have explained in a statement that the golfer took his own life.
Statement on behalf of Eric and Terry Murray:
We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but we also have to admit it to the world. It’s a nightmare.
We have so many questions that have no answers.
But there is one.
Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. For us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, his entire family, his friends, his fellow players and, apparently, many of those who are now reading this. He was loved and will be missed.
We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire golf world for their great support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson and, although he took his own life, we know that he now rests in peace.
Please respect our privacy as we deal with this incredible tragedy and honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we couldn’t ask for anything more.

Your problems with alcohol
Murray revealed many of the problems he had suffered after winning the Sony Open. Among other things, he talked about his addiction to alcohol and an episode during the 2023 Mexico Open: “I did 79 punches. I came home and had an anxiety attack that lasted four days. It was the worst feeling I’ve ever had; I never wanted to go through that again and it was the last time.” “I had a drink”.
