The European Union believes Ukraine’s recent incursion into the Russian border region of Kursk is part of the country’s “legitimate defensive war,” a spokesman said in Brussels on Thursday.

The spokesman for the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said Ukraine “has the right to defend itself” against Russia, including “hitting the enemy on his territory.”

Russia has declared a state of emergency in the Kursk region amid the fighting, with the Defence Ministry in Moscow saying around 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers are involved in the offensive.

The EU spokesman reiterated the bloc’s “full support for Ukraine in its legitimate self-defence against the aggression” and said it would continue to provide Kiev with “political, financial, humanitarian, diplomatic and military assistance.”
