On the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, European Council President António Costa has said he is committed to Ukraine.

“Three years ago, at this very moment, Russia’s invasion shattered peace in Ukraine and caused tremendous suffering to the Ukrainian people,” he wrote in a post on X in the early hours of Monday.

“Today we are all Ukrainians. The suffering Russia has inflicted on you since the start of this unprovoked war is cruel and unforgivable,” Costa said in an accompanying video.

“We were with you from day one and we will stand with you side by side, shoulder to shoulder. We want a just, fair and lasting peace, like you do,” he said.

“Ukraine’s future is in the European Union and Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security.”

Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are expected in Kiev on Monday to mark the anniversary.
