Russia says the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, has accepted an invitation to the military parade in Moscow on May 9 to commemorate the end of World War II in Europe 80 years ago.

In return, Xi has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the 80th anniversary of the Chinese victory over Japanese invaders in September, the Russian ambassador to Beijing, Igor Morgulov, told the Russia-24 television channel on Monday.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that reciprocal visits were being organized. Beijing did not initially confirm Xi’s participation.

China and Russia maintain close contact at all levels, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun. The ministry often does not announce visits by Chinese representatives abroad until shortly before they happen.

Russia celebrates May 9 every year as the day of victory over Germany in World War II. A military parade is held on Red Square in Moscow to mark the occasion. Western heads of state are staying away from the commemorations because of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.

China is officially neutral in the Ukraine war, but Beijing has never criticized Moscow for it and has massively expanded trade with its neighbour in the face of Western sanctions. China’s backing is considered important for Russia’s ability to continue fighting.
