The Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement has officially confirmed the death of former Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif, some six months after an Israeli airstrike.
In addition, Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida also stated Thursday for the first time that Marwan Issa, the third-highest-ranking Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, is dead.
Israel’s military has said it attacked Deif near Khan Yunis in the south of the coastal territory last July and killed him. Dozens of people were killed in the attack.
As early as March 2024, Israel’s army announced the killing of Issa, Deif’s deputy, in an air strike.
More than three months ago, Israel also declared Hamas leader Jihia al-Sinwar dead. Hamas confirmed this at the time. He was considered the mastermind behind the massacre in Israel on 7 October 2023.
Deif, as head of the Qassam Brigades, also played a central role in the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Hamas and other militant organizations in the Gaza Strip killed more than 1,200 people in the terrorist attack and abducted another 250 people into the Gaza Strip.
