European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the agreement on the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement, as well as the release of further hostages.
“This brings hope to an entire region, where people have endured immense suffering for far too long,” von der Leyen wrote on the platform X. She urged Israel and Hamas to fully implement the agreement.
EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas said it was now time to implement the agreement for all hostages and their families, the people in Gaza and the people in the region. She wrote on the platform X of ” a major, positive breakthrough towards ending the violence.”
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola referred on X to a potential “turning point for a sustainable peace.” She said the plan could trigger “a surge of aid,” and act as “a catalyst that changes despair to hope.”
