German customs officers have found 153 kilograms of cocaine aboard a freighter arriving from Colombia at the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven, Hanover customs and Oldenburg police reported on Friday.

Investigators from Hamburg were also involved in the search, which took place over several days. A sniffer dog was used.

The drugs were found in 150 parcels in five packages wrapped in fishing net. The value is put at several million dollars.

Oldenburg prosecutors have taken over the case with the aim of ascertaining the precise circumstances and the identity of those responsible.

Large quantities of cocaine are smuggled into Europe via North Sea ports. A man along the beach of the German holiday island of Sylt this week found a parcel of cocaine, reported to contain 25 kilograms of the drug.

During December, around 175 kilograms of the drug were found in total along the beaches of Föhr, Amrum and Sylt, all islands off the north-west German coast.
