Staff at a hospital in the Gaza Strip say more than 20 people have been killed in an Israeli attack in the north of the territory.
Palestinian witnesses reported that a four-storey residential building in Beit Lahia near the Kamal Adwan Hospital had been hit. On Wednesday morning the hospital reported that 21 bodies had been recovered, with more suspected to still be under the rubble.
The Israeli army did not initially comment. The military is fighting the Islamist group Hamas, which triggered the Gaza war with its attack on October 7, 2023.
The Palestinian authorities in Gaza say more than 44,700 people have been killed in the territory since then. No distinction is made in these figures between civilians and fighters.
The Israeli army says Hamas is currently trying to reorganize in the northern and central sections of the Gaza Strip.
