President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a public apology on Thursday following widespread criticism over his controversial declaration of martial law earlier this month. “I am very sorry for causing anxiety among our citizens,” Yoon stated during a televised address. His remarks come as nationwide protests continue, fueled by public outcry over what many see as an erosion of democracy.

The backlash against Yoon intensified after his government’s attempts to justify the martial law declaration as a measure to maintain stability in the face of civil unrest. Opponents argue that it was a disproportionate response, infringing on the freedoms of South Koreans.

Despite growing discontent, the National Assembly’s vote on impeachment failed to pass, leaving Yoon in office for the time being. The narrowly defeated motion has done little to quell public anger, with protesters gathering in major cities, demanding his resignation.

Among those joining the movement are prominent South Korean celebrities, including members of the popular girl group LOONA. Yves, a member of the group, expressed her solidarity with demonstrators in a heartfelt statement:

“I’m thinking every day about ways I can help, even from afar… It’s cold, so everyone, be careful not to catch a cold. Thank you so much!”

Her bandmate, Hyeju, took her activism a step further by attending a protest and sharing a photo from the event on social media. In her caption, she addressed potential criticism of her participation:

“Some people might feel uncomfortable that I’m voicing my opinion about this, but I am a citizen of this country before I am an idol, so I think this is the right thing to do. Let’s be strong!!!!”

The support from high-profile figures like Yves and Hyeju has energized younger protesters, many of whom see the idols as a reflection of their own values.
