The executive board of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to nominate party leader Alice Weidel on Saturday as the top candidate for the upcoming federal elections.

By nominating Weidel as top candidate, the AfD would put her forward to become the next chancellor should the party win the election, which is expected to take place in February.

Weidel and her co-chairman Tino Chrupalla plan to hold a press conference at 11:15 am (1015 GMT) where they said the decision would be announced.

This marks the first time in the nearly 12-year history of the AfD that a candidate for chancellor is being named.

Weidel herself explained the decision by asserting her party has a claim to govern, citing its opinion poll ratings.

The AfD is currently polling between 18 and 19% nationwide, placing it in second position. The conservative bloc is currently leading the polls with 32 to 33%.
