The Shiite Lebanese militia Hezbollah is set to commemorate on Saturday its slain leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed by an Israeli strike on the milita’s headquarters on September 27.
The event will be held in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of the Iran-backed group.
The ceremony, titled Light from Light, has been announced for 5:45 pm local time (1545 GMT). Hezbollah supporters are expected to gather at the sacred site of martyrdom – the former location of the organization’s headquarters in the Haret Hreik district, which seems already to have become a kind of shrine. In Shiite Islam, the theme of martyrdom plays a central role.
Israel, following the escalation of conflicts with Hezbollah, carried out numerous airstrikes on the stronghold of the Shiite militia in the south of the Lebanese capital. Only a few days ago, both sides agreed on a ceasefire.
