If Russian gains in the war in Ukraine cause another large wave of refugees into the European Union, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wants a fairer distribution of refugees among EU countries.
Faeser said she doesn’t expect such a development, but said that the current distribution of Ukrainian refugees currently places a heavy burden on only a handful of host countries.
“If people do have to flee because (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has stepped up the fighting and winter is approaching, then we would ensure solidarity in the EU,” Faser said.
Currently, 54% of all Ukrainian refugees in the EU are being hosted by Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, Faeser said.
“This must then be distributed to other countries,” she said.
Faeser also noted that Gemrany is seeking to provide Ukraine with comprehensive support, including technical support to keep the supply of heat and electricity going despite Russian airstrikes.
That aid, Faeser said, will help allow more people remain in western Ukraine.
