Islamabad/Berlin – Afghanistan’s ambassador to Berlin and the country’s consul general in Bonn resigned in separate statements on Monday, citing challenges in consular services and political pressures from the German government.
Yama Yari, the Afghan ambassador to Germany, and Said Lutfullah Sadat, Afghanistan’s consul general in Bonn, said that the missions have been facing challenges in providing consular services due to limitations imposed by the Taliban government in Kabul as well as pressures by the host country.
Diplomats sent to Germany by the government of former President Ashraf Ghani stated that they are stepping down as a result of these challenges and the political realities on the ground.
These decisions follow the Taliban government’s announcement that it would no longer recognize the consular services of some of the previous government’s diplomatic missions in the Western countries, including the Afghan missions in Berlin and Bonn.
In recent months, the Afghan diplomatic missions in London and Oslo were shut down at the request of the host countries.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban government has been seeking international recognition and aid, while also facing criticism over its governance practices. As a result, no country has officially recognized their government yet.
The Taliban retook power in Afghanistan in August 2021 following the departure of international military forces and a lightning military offensive that swept them into Kabul.
