The French pilots’ union SNLP on Friday called a one-day strike for November 14, amid a row over government plans to triple the tax on flight tickets.
The union fears this would have a negative effect on French airlines.
The impact of the strike on air traffic is not yet clear. Only French airlines would be affected by the action.
The business newspaper Les Échos reported on Friday that a number of Air France pilots are opposed to the planned strike, because they believe the action will harm the airline just as much as the increased levies, which Air France has already passed on in full to customers by raising ticket prices for next year.
The tax hike on airline tickets is expected to bring in an additional €1 billion ($1.08 billion) in tax revenue, with the French parliament currently looking to adopt an austerity budget that includes savings and additional revenues to make up for €60 billion.
The German airline industry is also up in arms over a rise in aviation tax, which was increased by 25% in May, as well as against air traffic control charges and the so-called aviation security fee, calling for the new charges to be scrapped.
