The Sisters of Saint Joseph celebrated their founding in Erie on Saturday, which dates all the way back to 1860.

While the group has been in Erie for more than 160 years, the organization on a global scale approaches 375 years since its founding in France.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph have played a key role in Erie’s development and its impact on several communities.

“For someone like me who was raised by the sisters through my education, it’s always nice to give back to the sisters and a lot of people do. They couldn’t continue the ministries without the support of the community,” said Almitra Clerkin, executive director of the Sisters of Saint Joseph Mission and Ministries Foundation.

The sisters are now turning their attention towards the holidays, where on Thanksgiving morning, some 60 volunteers will deliver some 1,300 meals to families in need throughout Erie.
