A drone intercepted by a German warship off the coast of Lebanon on Thursday was armed and exploded, a military spokesman said in Berlin.
The spokesman for Germany’s armed forces, the Bundeswehr, said “an explosive charge was set off” as the drone was downed in the “immediate vicinity” of the Ludwigshafen am Rhein corvette.
German lawmakers have been informed of the incident in parliament.
No injuries or damage were reported on board the warship, which is participating in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The incident took place around 30 kilometres north-west of the Lebanese port of Naqoura, where UNIFIL is headquartered.
