A victory for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in elections in the state of Brandenburg will be a “clear sign of hope,” the AfD lead candidate in the eastern state said.

If the AfD gained further support, “things will get better in Germany,” Hans-Christoph Berndt said as he cast his ballot in the Golssen constituency to the south of Berlin.

“We are stronger than in 2019,” Berndt said. Brandenburg’s future would not be decided in a single election but over the years ahead, he added.

Support for the AfD was on the rise, and that gave him confidence, Berndt said.
